What makes a perfume Arabic?

An Arabic perfume comes from a fragrance house in the Middle East or the Gulf region, where scent has been part of daily life for centuries. The style is easy to recognise: rich, warm compositions with plenty of amber, woods, spices and musk, and in the darker fragrances often oud, the resinous wood that is so prized in the region. Arabic fragrances for men therefore tend to feel fuller and more intense than much of what you find in a typical high-street perfumery, although there are plenty of fresh and clean options too.

One honest note: in Arabic perfumery the line between men's and women's fragrances is much looser than elsewhere. Many scents are simply unisex. That is why this selection shows the fragrances labelled for men first, followed by the unisex fragrances that many men wear.

Notes you will meet most often

When you browse Arabic perfume for men, the same building blocks keep returning. Here is what they do:

  • Bergamot and citrus: the bright, fresh opening that keeps a scent light and easy to wear day to day.
  • Apple: juicy and fruity, often paired with spice or wood for a modern masculine feel.
  • Spices: cardamom, pepper and saffron add warmth and a little tension without making the scent heavy.
  • Lavender: aromatic and clean, a classic base for a masculine fragrance.
  • Cedar and patchouli: dry, woody and earthy, they give structure and depth.
  • Amber, tonka and vanilla: soft, warm and enveloping, the heart of many evening scents.
  • Musk: a smooth, skin-like base that holds everything together.
  • Leather and oud: smoky, dark and distinctive, mostly found in the more powerful fragrances.

How to choose an Arabic perfume for men

Start with the occasion and the season. For the office, a warm summer day or a casual weekend, look for citrus, bergamot, lavender or apple. For dinners, nights out or colder weather, amber, spice, tonka, leather and oud usually suit better.

Everyday or evening

This selection includes both fresh, aromatic scents for the daytime and warm, powerful ones for the evening. If you cannot decide, a middle path with spice and cedar often works across several situations.

Eau de parfum or extrait de parfum

You will find both eau de parfum and extrait de parfum. An extrait de parfum contains a higher concentration of fragrance oils and usually feels deeper and more concentrated, while an eau de parfum tends to be lighter and easier for daily use. With an extrait, a small amount goes a long way.

How to apply it

Spray on pulse points such as your wrists, the sides of your neck and behind your ears, where the warmth of your skin helps the fragrance open up. Avoid rubbing your wrists together, as this can dull the notes. If you want a little more presence, you can also spray lightly on clothing, but check that the fabric allows it first. Rich, deep fragrances often show their best side when you apply them sparingly and let them develop at their own pace.

Try before you commit to a full bottle

A fragrance smells different on everyone, and darker compositions with oud and leather in particular are a matter of personal taste. That is why we also sell samples and decants of many of our fragrances. It lets you get to know a scent at home, at your own pace, before choosing a full bottle.

Frequently asked questions

Is Arabic perfume for men stronger than regular perfume?

Arabic perfumes often have a richer and more intense composition, with plenty of amber, spice, musk and oud. There are also fresh, light options built on citrus and bergamot, though. Look at the notes and the concentration to judge how strong a fragrance will feel.

Are Arabic perfumes only for men, or are they unisex?

Many Arabic perfumes are unisex. In this selection the fragrances labelled for men come first, followed by unisex fragrances that many men wear. In the end, a scent is whatever you enjoy wearing, regardless of the label.

Which notes are typical in an Arabic perfume for men?

Common notes include bergamot, citrus, apple, cardamom, pepper, saffron, lavender, cedar, patchouli, amber, tonka, vanilla, musk, leather and oud. Fresh notes suit the daytime, while the warm and dark notes work best in the evening and in colder months.

What is the difference between eau de parfum and extrait de parfum?

An extrait de parfum has a higher concentration of fragrance oils than an eau de parfum, so it usually feels deeper and more concentrated. An eau de parfum is often lighter and more practical for everyday wear. Both types are available in this selection.

Can I try a sample or decant first?

Yes, samples or decants are available for many of the fragrances. That way you can wear a scent for a few days and see how it behaves on your skin before deciding on a full bottle.

What is the best way to apply an Arabic perfume?

Spray on your pulse points: wrists, neck and behind the ears. Do not rub the skin, as this changes the notes. Start with a small amount, especially with an extrait or a fragrance rich in oud, and add more only if you want a stronger presence.
